What You Need to Know

The Look of Barnsley Resort

Barnsley Resort is named for Godfrey Barnsley, an English-born merchant who dreamed up the estate in the 1840s as a gift for his wife, Julia. Sadly, Julia died before it was completed, but the Italianate mansion (now in ruins) and intricately landscaped gardens — all designed to resemble an English countryside manor — remain for our enjoyment. The look is traditional elegance, from the main Inn building, with its grand staircase, hardwood floors, and rooms filled with antiques and reproduction pieces, to the freestanding cottages with wood-burning fireplaces, clawfoot tubs, and private porches with swings. Secluded Estate Cottages sleep between six and 18 guests and typically come with a pantry-style kitchen and spacious dining room.

The Vibe at Barnsley Resort

Despite the elegant surroundings, Barnsley is not stiff or stuffy. Rather, you’ll find guests of all ages — from small children and multigenerational families to groups of fortysomething friends — breezing about the property, enjoying activities like golf, horseback riding, and clay shooting. The staff is warm, welcoming, and on hand to help however they can — the epitome of Southern hospitality.

Who Will Love Barnsley Resort

Anyone looking for a relaxing resort stay with plenty of activities. The property is popular with families, friend groups, and couples.

Who Might Not Love Barnsley Resort

Couples craving a serene, kid-free escape won’t find that here — there’s no adults-only pool, for instance.

Best Amenity at Barnsley Resort

The range of restaurants is impressive for a resort this size: Between the Southern specialties at Woodlands Grill, elevated farm-to-table cuisine at Rice House, and barbecue and pizza at the Beer Garden, you won't tire of the options.
