There is no shortage of luxury hotels in Saint Barthélemy, that’s for certain. But the Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth specifically shows off with its stellar location, views, and spacious guest rooms where the décor is straight out of a design mag. What was once simply the Le Carl Gustaf got a marvelous makeover when it reopened in October of 2020 as part of Barrière, a French luxury hotel group. Here, our review:

What You Need to Know About Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth

The Look of Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth

Stroll or drive up a hill and the property is discreetly tucked away into a secret tropical luxury oasis. If you’re walking, it’s not without a bit of effort, but pays off when you see that the location affords pinch-me views of the water and of Gustavia, the lively port town just below.

The hotel was designed and decorated by French interior designers Gilles & Boissier. Each guest room is unique and most feature private swimming pools on a spacious veranda; plan accordingly as you’ll want to spend time there — perhaps breakfast or an evening cocktail with a dip between sips.

Two distinct dining concepts are on offer, including the new Beefbar and — just down that hill — Shellona Restaurant, situated right on the beloved Shell Beach (a wildly popular spot for sunset-watching with a glass of rose).

The small but serene Spa Diane Barrière features products from Biologique Recherche and offers various activities such as aquabiking (you can ask for a bike to be placed in your own private hotel pool), pilates, and yoga.

The Vibe at Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth

No property does the whole sense-of-place better than Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth. Guests are greeted in an open-air lobby that offers gorgeous sunset views, which then extends to the high-end Beefbar restaurant. Furnishings are the epitome of island-chic without being cheesy, and will have you snapping photos from every angle. If you had a beach house, you’d want it to look like this.

You’ll see effortlessly stylish visitors (did you imagine anything else?) sipping cocktails at sunset, but no one is overly fussy; just like the island itself. Beefbar is already bringing in an in-the-know local crowd.

Who Will Love Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth

Couples, friend groups, and even families will enjoy the property (the latter due to the large rooms and private pools). We saw an equal amount of each during our recent visit.

Who Might Not Love Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth

Those looking for a large chain hotel might want to look elsewhere for accommodations.

Best Amenity at Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth

The hotel’s restaurant has just landed a brand-new partnership with the international brand Beefbar. Opened in November of 2023, the menu leans heavily on high-end cuts like Wagyu and Kobe, but offers plenty for pescatarians and vegetarians. The steamed ginger sea bass is so good we ordered it three times.

Nearest Public Transportation to Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf St Barth

Unfortunately, there is no public transportation on St. Barth (nor are there ride shares, but you can find a taxi); perhaps that’s another reason it’s considered so exclusive. However, locals and visitors often hitchhike around the island (we did!), but be careful. The bottom line: Rent a car for ease and convenience.

The Bottom Line

Exclusive island aesthetics with a laid-back but super luxury feel can be found at this property.
